Stop Training on Empty

At EVO, we talk a lot about consistency, recovery, and listening to your body. But there’s one piece that often gets overlooked, fuel.

If you’re showing up to the gym underfed, you’re not doing yourself any favors. Low energy. Poor focus. Sluggish movement. That’s your body telling you it doesn’t have enough fuel to do what you’re asking of it.

Here’s the thing, training is stress. It’s good stress, but it’s still stress. If you don’t have fuel in the tank, your body has to work even harder to recover. That means slower progress, inconsistent strength, and often, more soreness or irritation in your joints and muscles.

You don’t need a full meal before every session, but you do need something. A few examples:

  • A banana or toast with a nut butter 20-40 minutes before training
  • Greek yogurt and fruit on the way in if you’re short on time
  • A balanced meal with plenty of carbs, protein, and a little fat 60-90 minutes beforehand

And don't forget, you must replenish your fuel stores after training as well so start thinking about what your meal will look like in the hour after training.

The goal isn’t to be “perfect.” It’s to give your body enough energy to train well and recover stronger.

At EVO, we’ll always meet you where you’re at, but fueling properly makes everything you’re working toward that much easier.
If you’ve been dragging through your workouts lately, start by looking at your plate.

You’ll notice the difference when you do.

Ty Training

I love training. I love training hard. I love to challenge my body and push the limits. I think you should too. I also think there’s a better way to do it. I’ve spent 20 years working as a trainer/coach. 20 years of getting people started. 20 years of helping people navigate injury. I’ve dedicated my life to watching people learn, grow, and get strong AF. Every single person I’ve had the pleasure to work with has left a lasting impact on me and how I train. I do this because I love it. I do this because I want YOU to love it just as much.

Everybody wants results yesterday. Fast fixes. Six-week programs. Thirty-day challenges. The promise that if you just work hard enough for a short enough period of time, you’ll finally reach the finish line. But here’s the thing: there is no finish line. Real health. Real strength. Feeling good in your body. Being able to pick up your kids, travel, get off the floor, carry your groceries, hike, play, and do the things you want to do as you get older. That’s a lifetime project. Guess what?...

Today, Tovah and I toured the local middle school for our son. Our little boy is not so little anymore and honestly, it stopped me in my tracks. Twelve years ago, we were bringing him home from the hospital. Now we’re walking hallways seeing all these grown up kids, talking schedules, lockers and wondering how we got here so quickly. It’s wild! People say it all the time, but you don’t really feel it until you’re standing in it:The days are long. The years are short. I talk to women every...

Many women often tell a similar story:“My back hurts.”“I know my core is weak.”“I need to strengthen my abs.” But here’s the truth most people don’t hear:It’s not always your core.More often than not, your legs just aren’t strong enough. When your leg muscles are underdeveloped (think glutes, quads, and hamstrings) they cannot support your structure. This results in your body has to borrow stability from somewhere else. Usually that “somewhere” is your lower back or your pelvic floor. And that...
